Ways of Working
Written by Sue WildbloodHow does a typical job go?
Well, in my experience, each job is totally unique and individual, but in general terms, this is the process:
I will give you a provisional quote for the piece of work, based mainly on word count. This applies to both Copy Writing and Copy Editing/Proofreading.
Once I have received an item to be Copy Edited/Proofread, I will quickly read through it to give me some idea of the amount of work that will be involved.
For Copy Writing, I will do some preliminary investigation to see how much research is needed and how easy it will be to obtain the relevant information.
At this stage, I will be able to issue a firm quote.
Assuming you are happy with the quote, I will agree some ground rules with you. These will include;
- How you wish me to contact you, by email or by phone. Email is the most popular option.
- If I am Copy Writing, whether you wish to provide information sources, key words and writing style, or you wish me to provide them myself.
- For Copy Editing and Proofreading, whether you want me to make changes as I go, or highlight all changes for your approval. I usually do a combination of the two, making changes to spelling, grammar, and punctuation as I go, but making a list of other more substantial suggested changes for your approval.
- How often you would like updates – every day, every time there is something significant, whatever is appropriate.
Having agreed the ground rules, and understanding what your deadlines are, I will usually ask for a small deposit, (ideally via PayPal) and then proceed with the piece of work, giving you regular updates as agreed.
Once I have completed the piece of work, I will submit it to you for your approval, making any further changes as required until you are happy with the outcome.
In some cases, it may become apparent that the piece of work is going to take longer than was first anticipated. If this occurs, I will let you know immediately, and we can agree a way forward.
Once you are happy with the finished article, I will invoice you (again using PayPal) for the balance of the payment due.
